Why in-person-only conference<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\nThe raison d’\u00eatre of a conference is the meeting – the conversation and discussion of the research and beyond. At DIS 20224, we want to underscore the qualitative lived experience of the conference as a venue for this meeting. We do not think it is wise to ignore the importance of the physical meeting. Traveling for DIS2024, people expect to have the option of conversations with the authors, which is why prerecorded video presentations are problematic. We are working to make dedicated space for social interactions, discussions, exhibition experiences, and ways for ideas to be shared beyond paper presentations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hybrid conference costs twice as much because of the technical backbone required to make it work. This is also why CHI 2024 is not hybrid. Journals are a well-established venue to publish articles that do not require traveling, and hopefully, we will see a bigger emphasis on quality journals in job assessments, etc., going forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
This year, we will differentiate conference fees based on the country of departure to allow for more equity in conference participation. However, we realize this does little to the travel and accommodation costs, but we are trying to find affordable accommodation options near the conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
At DIS 2024 this year, we will have a town hall meeting at 14 CET on Wednesday to discuss recommendations for how to do future DIS conferences. We have decided to do the town hall meeting hybrid so everyone has a chance to chime in. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
