Student volunteers (SVs) are essential to the success of the DIS 2023 conference. Being a volunteer provides a unique opportunity to contribute to organizing a conference as well as to interact closely with DIS contributors, attendees, and your peers.

We will mainly be accepting IN-PERSON SVs for this year’s conference. However, we will accept a small number of SVs to complete remote-only tasks. SVs can state their preference in the volunteer form. We encourage all applicants to update the form once your participation mode is clearer later in the year.

Becoming a volunteer

To register, you must be an undergraduate, masters, or doctoral student for at least one semester during the 2022-2023 academic year. DIS 2023 will take place in person in Pittsburgh. Please note that it is your responsibility to obtain necessary travel visas if required. To apply, no previous experience is required, but we are looking for people who are reliable, enthusiastic, and friendly. We expect to have around 30 SVs for DIS 2023.

Please fill out the volunteer form by May 1, 2023 to be considered:

What will I do as a volunteer?

As an SV, you agree to:

  • Work around 20 hours before, during, or after the conference
  • Attend orientation meeting
  • Be available and perform assigned tasks in a timely manner
  • Arrive at the conference by Sunday morning at the latest

Benefits of working as a Volunteer

  • Free t-shirt
  • Free conference registration (In-Person SVs only)
  • Access to a student volunteer lounge during the conference (In-Person SVs only)
  • Breakfast and lunch on conference days (In-Person SVs only)
  • An exclusive SV party on Friday night (July 14, 2023). We highly recommend that you leave on Saturday or Sunday so you can attend the party. (In-Person SVs only)

T-Shirt Design Contest

This year, we call on students to design a t-shirt that our SVs will wear while on duty. If your design is selected, you get a free SV spot for DIS 2023! As a winner, you can either take or give it to a friend (as long as they are eligible to work as an SV). If you are interested in participating in the t-shirt design competition, please submit your design, including both the front and back of the shirt, as an image or PDF to with the subject line “DIS 2023 T-Shirt Design Contest” by May 1, 2023.

Design Details

You may want to connect your design to the location (Pittsburgh), or not, it doesn’t matter as long as it’s respectful of local culture, fun, interesting, and can stand out a bit in the crowd. Please send us front/back designs, noting that we cannot print on sleeves or the extreme edges of the shirts. Designs should be ONE color. In general, this means a black or white design on a colored shirt. The imprint size is roughly 11′′ wide and 13′′ high front or back. Submissions Details The designs can be submitted as a PDF, JPG, or PNG format. If your design is selected as a winning design, we will require the final version to be either in .eps or .ai format. You can submit several designs or variations. The deadline for submission is May 1, 2023. We will select a winner in the week following the contest submission deadline.
